Alice Rants: Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai

Hello everyone!

I wanted to cover this cause I DID watch it, and I talked about it the other day. ._.

So. Oreimo. Spoilers ahead.

Plot:

The story is of Kousaka Kyousuke, a plain teenager. There's nothing really special about him, he's your average teenager. However, his little sister, Kousaka Kirino is his exact opposite. She's pretty, smart and athletic, in other words, the perfect daughter a person could wish for. They do not get along however, in fact, it is as though they are going through a cold war. One day, he discovers that she's a massive otaku, liking both anime and erotic games. Now, he has to help her in her plight to make friends, hide this fact from her parents and to further her life in general.

What I think about this plot:

The basis of it is fine really. You can't complain, nor extremely like it. Now, let's get into the spoilers.

Kirino getting help from her brother is fine, they may be in a cold war, but it's not like she completely despises her brother, this can be seen in later episodes, but it's also impossible to hate your family unless they've REALLY messed up. And since he IS the only one to know of her secret, he IS the only one that can help her.

Their little adventure is cute too, in several ways, you can see that their relationship improves throughout the story.

Sadly, I hate how the plot followed.

I don't mind incest in animes. In real life, that's my opinion, and no one shall really defy me for that. HOWEVER, while I don't mind that he likes his little sister, I DO MIND the way that he rejected all the other girls.

I don't mind that he rejected the other girls, like, if you LIKE SOMEONE, you might not wanna go out with another person, that's normal. But the way he said it to some of them was just cruel. Yes, it'll still crush them to know he's going out with his sister, but you don't scream in their faces like a monkey on drugs. I mean, look what he said to Ayase compared to what he said to Kuroneko or Manami. For those who don't really know what he said, lemme give you a TINY INTERPRETATION:

To Ayase:

I'm sorry... I can't. I like someone else.

To Kuroneko/Manami:

THERE'S NO WAY I CAN GO OUT WITH YOU, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE MY LITTLE SISTER. I'M A PERVERT WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS LITTLE SISTERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

((Note to the readers, the caps are to emphasize the way the man is screaming))

I mean... what the Hell man. ._.

More importantly though:

Yes, WHAT INDEED. Let me tell you how much I love Kirino. I don't.

"But Alice! She's a tsundere! You have to work for her affection!"

No, I don't wanna. Lemme get this straight for you. Kirino is nice to the WHOLE WORLD, BUT KYOUSUKE, before their relationship got better, which I find stupid, but will cover later. In fact, he works his ass off to get ONE DAMN "... thanks." outta her. Now, you might find this kinda cute, but let's say THIS HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE, you'd be pissed, no? You try to help, only to be called "Shithead" every two seconds, and getting a little whisper as compensation. Girl, gtfo. ._.

I mean, he DOES get treated better in season two, WHICH PROBABLY FACTORED IN HIS LOVE POINTS BUT... I dunno, Kirino is more of a b*tch than a tsun for me. And by the way, I do like tsuns, if they were friggen written well. Kirino is just... *sigh*

And this was stupid. I mean, if you're gonna dump all of them, DO IT PROPERLY. DON'T JUST BE LIKE:

"Welp, I GUESS THAT'S IT."

YOU REJECTED. ALL THE OTHER GIRLS. FOR A SHORT RELATIONSHIP. WTF. PLZ. MAN. DUDE.

For those who don't know again, basically, they didn't really break up, they like decided they'd only date for a while. Like, they imposed a time limit. ._____.

MOVING ON.

However, character development was pretty good. At least in second season, they did stuff with the other characters a lot more. And the other girls have good reasons to like Kyousuke.

Kirino does become a lot nicer in season 2, but I still don't like her so... ._.

Well, game Kirino is a lot better. *sigh*

However... I HATED THIS. It's like the writer didn't know who Manami as a character was. She became REALLY OOC. .____.

I actually started rooting for Kirino, then regretted my decision again, 'cause I don't like Kirino. LIKE. THAT'S HOW MUCH SHE WAS OOC.

And...

I swear to God, this was uncalled for. Yes, this statement is true. HOWEVER. KIRINO WAS A BRAT AT THE TIME. PLUS, SHE DIDN'T MENTION LIKING KYOUSUKE.

Like, I have this theory that Kirino might have been MUCH BETTER IF THIS NEVER HAPPENED. Simply because she might have never realized she loved her brother, or at least, Kirino was at an unstable age that she'll do the exact opposite someone tells her to do. *sigh*

Characters:

Let's begin an analysis of the characters. Or the ones that really matter. XD

Kousaka Kyousuke, 17-18, third year of high school. Is average in every way imaginable, and finds himself in trouble every two seconds. Likes helping people and is usually very logical.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HIM:

I liked him, before he went full retard. I mean, think about it, why the HELL was he so weird when dating Kirino. When he was dating Kuroneko, everything was fine. ._.

Other than that, I get how he wanted to get along with his little sister, since they stopped doing so for a while. I mean, I'd rather want to get along with my family than be in a feud with them. And I always like helping people. So, yeah. Iunno, I pretend the OVAs didn't exist.

Kousaka Kirino, 14-15, third year of middle school. Good grades, athletic, works as a model and one of the most popular kids in school. Otaku that likes little kid animes and little sister eroge.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER:

I hate her. I'm sorry, I hate how her brain works. Who the hell is mean to their older brother in an attempt to make them become amazing like they were in the past. Wouldn't you wanna study with them or something, get on their terms, and THAT'S how you convince them?

And she just seems like a b*tch in public. Maybe not with her otaku friends, but with her normal ones. Plus, when she doesn't get her way, she "cries" on and onnnnnnnnn, like, girl. GROW THE F*CK UP PLEASE.

((*sigh* I can't find a pic of her ALONE in a bathing suit on the beach.))

Gouko Ruri, AKA Kuroneko, 15-16, first year of high school. Good at housework, always seems to quote an anime she watched, extremely shy, cherishes her friends.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER:

I love her. I don't even know why. It may be because I somewhat idolize her. She's able to like whatever she wants to like without her parents judging her, she isn't scared of expressing her love for such things, people accept her and she's good at housework. I just like her attitude in general. She's a bit weird, but is... adorable. WHATEVER, IF THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, JUST KNOW THAT I LOVE HER. ;-;

Makishima Saori. 17-18, third year of high school. Acts goofy around her friends, but is actually a shy, young woman. Is in a wealthy family.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER:

I like her too. :3 Just look at those boobs. But really, goodness. Anywho, she seems like a massively social person due to how she acted around her friends, but is secretly a shy girl. She was basically acting like one of her old friends to avoid her shy personality, and it worked. She's really understanding, and strives to keep her friends close no matter what. WHAT A NICE GIRL.

Aragaki Ayase, 14-15, second year of middle school. Works as a model, one of Kirino's closest friends and despises otakus ((at first)).

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER:

I... now... like her. To be honest, in the first season, she urked me simply because she completely rejected her best friend due to her otaku tendencies. Though later, it is revealed she only did that because she liked the perverted sense of it, and in general, otakus are looked down upon in Japan. Plus, she IS making an effort to accept Kirino, since she IS her best friend. She's really pretty, and frankly, she's adorable personality-wise. She also has a yandere side. Instant. Turn-on. ._.

((This is fanart BTW, and I didn't make it))

Kurusu Kanako, 14-15, second year of middle school. Works as an idol, one of Kirino's closest friends and despises otakus ((sorta?)).

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER:

Um... how do I do this? Basically, she's annoying, but she's earnest in what she loves to do. Iunno, I wouldn't date her in the PSP game if I couldn't, but she's still better than Kirino in my opinion. ._. She DOES turn out better in the PSP version I hear but for now... eh.

((Did she not go to the beach in the game? ._.))

Tamura Manami, 17-18. Third year of high school. Average looks, average grades, old-fashioned.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER:

I REALLY REALLY LOVE HER. I LEGITIMATELY DO NOT CARE WHAT HAPPENED TO HER IN SEASON TWO. She's really sweet and cares for others, furthermore she's really supportive of Kyousuke in most of his decisions ((AKA not the season two one)). Plus, I believe what happened in season two was a bad writing case, because in my eyes, her character took a 180. Even the author himself said so. In fact, I find the PSP one more canon, since it's the one the author wanted to write, but the editor went "LOL NOPE" to him. In that one, she's... THE MANAMI I KNEW AND LOVED OKAY. ;-;

Overall:

Well, check it out. It's a good one. I mean, like I said, check the OVAs if you're brave, but I REALLY DISLIKE THEM. And if you won't take my word as a Kirino hater, then I'll tell you that my Kirino-love friend hates them too so...

It's a cute anime though. Without the OVAs, it's an 7-8/10 for it's genre. With them though... might be like a 5/10. ._.

  2. It depressed me what they did to Manami in the second season. She didn't deserve how they suddenly shoehorned her into that "scheming dubious bitch" personality rewrite out of nowhere, just so those two could use her as a doormat to justify their little temporary incestuous roleplay or whatever childish crap that was. Watching her walk away alone was too heartbreaking. After it was over I was listening to "Abba - The Winner Takes It All" on loop for a couple of hours, feeling like trash. I didn't take it well.
